Ecomar Foundation: 20 years thinking blue

Ecomar Foundation: 20 years thinking blue

More than 20 years ago, Theresa Zabell, double Olympic medallist, set in motion what had been her dream for a long time: to somehow return to the sea what the sea had given to her.

This is how Ecomar Foundation was born, a non-profit organization dedicated to education in the care of our seas, their flora and fauna. Since its inception, Ecomar has been focused on working with children, owners of the future and great agents of change, today and tomorrow.

To achieve its objectives, the Foundation works on 5 pillars or areas: sport, awareness, healthy living, sustainability and solidarity. With a frequently transversal approach, Ecomar has been implementing over the years multiple initiatives through which it invites adults and children to be part of the solution, not the problem.

Some of these initiatives are:

  • Grimpola Ecomar: Sailing Courses and Workshops in collaboration with Nautical and Regatta Clubs. All along the Spanish and much of the Portuguese coasts, Ecomar has developed an environmental, educational and recreational programme that combines the passion for sailing with environmental education.
Each year, as part of this program, the Foundation launches a Ship’s Logbook that is a very useful guide to know, enjoy and respect the sea.

  • Coastal Cleanup, Circular Seas Program. Through this program, and with the invaluable help of its Volunteers, Ecomar carries out beach and coastal cleaning days, always preceded by a talk on recycling. In addition to the punctual cleaning of an area, the program invites local authorities, organizations and volunteers to Sponsor their Coasts, to carry out periodic cleaning activities.

One of the most recent examples of this activity took place on September 21st and 22nd, when numerous Ecomar volunteers and locals (including the kids of the Mar Menor Nautical Club, who gave up a day of training to collaborate with the cleaning work) helped cleaning up the damage caused by the DANA in Los Alcázares and Pilar de la Horadada (Murcia). We have no words to thank the help and good work of the Foundation and all the volunteers in this area, devastated by the storm.

  • Collaboration with other entities for the implementation of various campaigns and initiatives. This is the case of the competition "Ponte las pilas y recicla" (Spanish play on words inviting people to do something good with batteries and recycle), with which the nautical clubs and sailing schools of the Spanish coasts collected two tons of used batteries last summer. Or Free 1m2 days, a joint action with Ecoembes and Seo Bird Life to clean up coasts. Or the sailing days with people with special needs...

  • Ecomar Heroes: Collaboration with a series of outstanding athletes, such as Alex Pella, Aitor Francesena, Saúl Craviotto, Jordi Xamma Marina Alabau and María Perelló, among others, who act as ambassadors for the Foundation, helping to spread its philosophy, values and lifestyle.

And these are some of the impressive figures that all this tireless work translates into:

For all these reasons, and for fully sharing the Foundation's values and its sincere concern and commitment to caring for the environment, it is a privilege for Laken to be able to do our bit in the Foundation's work, collaborating with what we do best: reusable bottles.

In recognition of our collaboration, we already have this beautiful certificate to hang in our offices.

Diploma Ecomar Foundation
