Every year since 1974 World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June, a date that was created with the objective of raising awareness to all countries in our planet for its care and protection. This current year the host country is Colombia, one of most biodiverse countries in the world, main theme this year 2020 in this important day.
Colombia is characterized by a fascinating flora and fauna with more than 51,000 species in addition to sharing African, European and, of course, indigenous culture. Located in the northwest of Latin America is crossed by the Andean Coast Range and at the same time it has coast on both sides by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east, which places this country in a privileged place for the great and very rich biodiversity that it has.
Despite needs and benefits of keeping this biodiversity alive and unaffected by our human activity around the world, it seems that this topic doesn’t concern us at all because of the way we treat nature in general. This is the main reason why this World Environment Day exists, trying to raise awareness at a global level and achieve reduction in the felling of forests, the extinction of species, large-scale pollution, the excessive consumption of goods and food, ...
The main issue that after 3 months still occupies the pages of all media today, COVID-19, also has much to do with this problem of accelerated destruction of biodiversity. By destroying the planet's biodiversity we are destroying the balance between species and therefore human life, even if we cannot see it immediately. New diseases are appearing, increasing our resistance to them the more balanced we are with nature, but if we don’t take care of this we will be getting closer and closer to an imminent collapse.
From Laken we support the World Environment Day and we encourage you that appart of the agreements and international treaties we all become aware to achieve a cleaner world and harmonious world because every single gesture from each of us is the main tool to see the change we need and we want.
The solution is in our hands.
