If you have ever opened your reusable bottle and noticed a bad smell, you are not alone. It’s one of the most common concerns and, luckily, it has a solution.
The good news: it doesn’t mean your bottle is in bad condition.
In most cases, the problem is in the use and cleaning.
Why does bad odor appear in a bottle?
The smell does not come from the material (if it is quality like LAKEN’s), but from residues left inside or in the cap.
The most common causes are:
- Drink residues (juices, coffee, isotonic drinks…)
- Moisture accumulated with the bottle closed
- Lack of complete drying
- Dirt accumulated in the cap
The cap is key: it’s the part where residues and odors accumulate most easily.
Is it normal for it to smell?
Yes, it can happen with any reusable bottle if it is not cleaned properly.
Even 18/8 stainless steel, which does not retain odors, can develop bad smells if there are residues inside or in the cap gaskets.
How to eliminate bad odor (quick and effective)
In most cases, a good cleaning is enough:
- Wash the bottle with hot water and mild detergent
- Add a mixture of hot water with a little vinegar
- Shake well and let it sit for a few minutes
- Clean with a soft brush if necessary
- Rinse well and let dry completely open
For more persistent odors:
- You can use water with a few drops of bleach (very small amount)
- Let it sit for several hours
- Wash again normally before using it

Key tip: also clean the cap (and its gasket)
For a truly thorough cleaning, it’s important not to forget the cap.
From time to time, you can disassemble it and remove the silicone gasket:
- Wash it with hot water and soap
- Rinse it well
- Put it back correctly
It’s a small piece, so do it carefully.
In some models, the gasket is not removable, but it is still advisable to clean the entire area well.
The most common (and most important) mistake
Storing the bottle closed and damp.
This is the main reason odors appear.
Always let the bottle dry completely and store it uncovered.
How to prevent it from happening again
Very simple:
- Clean the bottle after each use (especially if it’s not just water)
- Wash the cap frequently (preferably by hand)
- Avoid leaving liquids inside for days
- Always dry it open
If you use your bottle only for water, maintenance will be minimal.
But if you use it for coffee, juices, or smoothies, it is important to pay special attention to cleaning, especially the cap.
When should you change the cap?
If after several cleanings the smell persists, it is likely that the source is the cap.
In that case, replacing it is the best option to restore the experience of use like the first day.
At LAKEN we have replacement parts to extend the life of your bottle without needing to replace it entirely.
